Beverley, England

Situated about 30 minutes North of Hull is the lovely town of Beverley. Michelle and Riley hopped on a double-decker bus that passed in front of their flat on a Saturday Morning in February and headed toward the town. Beverley has a nice size Saturday market, which resembles a flea market in Arizona without the fleas. They spent some time perusing up and down the booths. Michelle bought some cushions for her shoes. (Good Idea) Riley was more interesting in what food was available. He ended up buying a German sausage, which was quite tasty.

Bev. Church exterior- The main attraction in Beverley and of course, the tallest is the Beverley Minster. It is a gothic church and used to be one of the richest in England. Worshippers during the Middle Ages used to come to the Minster for good luck before heading off of war somewhere. They would also donate lots of dinero, which made the Beverley Minster quite wealthy. Michelle and Riley circled the church snapping photos from all angles. The only problem was that it all didn’t fit in the camera view finder, so they eventually crossed the street, backed away, and some nice pictures were taken.

Bev Church Interior – Our necks hurt looking up so high at the ceiling of the Beverley Minster, but it was worth it. It was quite dark inside the church thanks to an overcast forecast for the day. The stained glass was neato and very beautiful.

Bev. Wheel- In the afternoon, Riley and Michelle went on a tour up to the roof of the church. They squeezed through a tiny doorway and circled up a spiraled stone staircase and eventually ended up at the top. It was quite interesting to see the ‘guts’ or the framework of the church. There were log frames and lots of cement mainly in the roof. One very nice feature was a huge spinning wheel, not for giant gerbils, but for humans who would use it to haul supplies up to the roof. The tour guide did a demonstration for the group.

Bev. Roof Hole – This was the view from the roof of the church through the hole uses for supplies at the top of the church. The spinning wheel opened up a cover to this hole and this was the view. Quite spectacular! No-one at the bottom even looked up to see us peering down at them. We heard the organ playing loudly when it opened up. It was good that no-one in the tour group had vertigo because we were up very high. The trip down the stairs was much easier than the ascent. Before leaving the town of Beverley, Michelle grabbed an ice-cream cone and Riley helped her down it.

The architecture is spectacular! It looks like they took their time in designing and building it. It is a work of art! It seems different than the architecture now days--with our fast paced lifestyle.
